NEWs 17/11/2014: Post-doc at Simula Research Lab

============================================
Post-doctoral research position
in Internet Protocol Stack Evolution
at Simula Research Laboratory (Oslo, Norway)
============================================

Description
-----------

The Media Department of the Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications (CRNA) at Simula Research Laboratory has an opening for one full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow, in the field of Computer Networking and Internet Technologies. The position is available for three years, starting from March 1st, 2015.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will closely interact with the CRNA teams working on low-latency networking for Internet applications, and on mobile broadband networks. The official working language in the Centre, and at Simula, is English.

This position is connected to the EU-funded research project NEAT (A New, Evolutive API and Transport Layer for the Internet), starting in March 1st, 2015. The NEAT project, coordinated by Simula, will be carried out by a consortium of top industry players (Celerway, Cisco, EMC, Mozilla) and academic centres (Fachhochschule Münster, Karlstad
University, University of Aberdeen, University of Oslo).

Research in the NEAT project will tackle the problem of the ossification of the Internet protocol stack. The long-term goal of NEAT is to bring an architectural change to the Internet, by redesigning the way in which Internet applications interact with the network. This will be achieved by allowing network services offered to applications - such as reliability, low-delay communication or security - to be dynamically tailored on a best-effort basis, considering application demands, current network conditions, hardware
capabilities or local policies; also, by supporting the integration of new network functionality in an evolutionary fashion, without applications having to be rewritten.

Responsibilities
----------------

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be part of a project team that will work on designing, developing and testing novel transport-layer systems and mechanisms, as well as service-oriented APIs for Internet applications. The project will also contribute to standardisation efforts such as the newly-chartered TAPS working group of the IETF. Research activities will be done in close collaboration with project partners, and will require a practical, hands-on approach to build real-world prototypes.

As a Post-doctoral fellow, the candidate is expected to collaborate with PhD students, and to supervise and collaborate with Master students. We provide the opportunity, as well as support, to apply for research funding or commercialization funding, which could help establish follow-up projects. There are no requirements for teaching duties.

Candidate profile
-----------------

We are looking for outstanding candidates with:

- A PhD degree (or very near completion of their PhD) on Computer Science or a related discipline.

- A strong track record of scientific publications.

- Extensive knowledge of data communication technologies. In particular, in-depth knowledge of Internet transport protocols and standards is mandatory.

- Strong programming skills and proven experience with network programming. Kernel programming skills will be highly regarded. The main platform of development will be Linux, but knowledge of other operating systems, e.g., FreeBSD, is also beneficial.

- The ability to both collaborate closely with others, and work independently on challenging problems.

- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, due to the international and distributed nature of the project.

How to apply
------------

Candidates MUST send their application via the following link:

https://emea3.recruitmentplatform.com/syndicated/private/syd_apply.cfm?id=QL5FK026203F3VBQBV779QWAD&;nPostingTargetID=116

Applications sent by e-mail will not be examined.

The application MUST include:

- A Curriculum Vitae, with full contact information, education, positions and academic work (including a full list of scientific publications).
- An application letter explaining the candidate's background (including a summary of the PhD thesis), qualifications and research interests.
- A list of relevant publications and academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee.
- Copies of relevant diplomas / degree certificates, transcripts of records and letters of recommendation.
- Contact information of 2-3 reference persons (name, current position, relation to the candidate, phone and e-mail).
- For non-native English speakers, a proof of proficiency in English is optional but recommended (e.g., results from standard tests; having completed a university degree in an English-speaking country counts as proof of proficiency).

Note that ALL documents MUST be submitted in PDF format, and with the exception of the CV, combined into one single PDF document in the same order specified by the list above. To avoid misplacement, please make sure to include your first and last name in the filenames of all documents that you send us.

Deadline for applying
---------------------

Applications should be submitted as soon as possible, and no later than *December 6, 2014*. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

NEWs 03/11/2014: Open position at TECNALIA (Data Analytics and Optimization)

Description of the position:

The OPTIMA (Optimization, Modeling & Analytics) research area within the ICT/ESI division of TECNALIA focuses its activity on the design and application of advanced algorithms springing from Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Statistics and Semantics/NLP to different problems in diverse disciplines such as Energy (Smart Grids), Telecommunications, Transportation Systems, Business Intelligence and Logistics. The activity performed in the OPTIMA area gravitates on the so called BIG DATA group, composed of a reduced number of highly qualified researchers with strong competences in analytics, on which the technological offer of the whole area hinges. In particular, BIG DATA group concentrates its activity and know-how on the derivation of optimization, clustering, forecasting, data mining, and in general, artificial intelligence techniques to model and solve highly complex problems unable to be tackled by means of conventional mathematical approaches. The applicant will eventually join the BIG DATA group to perform edge-cutting research on descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics for scenarios stemming from the above fields, including – but not limited to – classification/regression techniques, perceptual mapping (MDS, ISOMAP, LLE) for data segmentation and understanding, and heuristic optimization (with an emphasis on surrogate model assisted techniques). Emerging applications on operational planning, insurance risk modeling, churn prediction in business customer portfolio, fraud detection and strategic decision support will be investigated in detail.

TIFER: TECNALIA’S INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR EXPERIENCED RESEARCHERS 3rd CALL 2014 (http://www.tifer-fellowships.com/):

In relation to its INCOMING scheme, TIFER supports the temporary incorporation (2 years contract) of experienced researchers to TECNALIA (Fundación Tecnalia Research & Innovation or Fundación Azti) to develop their proposed research projects with TECNALIA´s research teams and facilities. The aim of the programme is to foster and consolidate the European Research Area (ERA) by attracting talented researchers and developing their careers.

- Candidates must be non-residents undertaking trans-national mobility. Definition of trans-national mobility: At the time of the deadline for submission of proposals, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date; short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

- Candidates must hold a PhD Degree at the moment of the start of the fellowship, or must have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience (including the period of research training) after the degree which formally allowed them to embark on a doctorate.

- Candidates must propose a research Project aligned with strategic research fields for Tecnalia.

This programme is co-funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme ( COFUND – People – Marie Curie Actions).

Application deadline: 30/11/2014.
